When You Are Unattached

When you are unattached you can walk around a supermarket

eyeing up the cashiers – imagining what it would be like

to fall in love with all of them – one-by-one, picturing

the realities.

What are their personalities? The black one with the trendy hair –

What political beliefs do they hold?

And should you pledge your heart to one in particular

but then find yourself, at a quarter past midnight,

all by yourself in the dark

feeling affection for another

well it really doesn’t matter. It isn’t really adultery.

It’s all imaginary; fanciful.

Harmless, even.

Which should make me happy, I suppose.
